October is a good time to test the basics.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an opportunity to move beyond posters and reminders. Use October to verify the controls that make a measurable difference when an account is compromised, a device is lost or ransomware disrupts operations.

Five checks for a stronger October.

A focused review can expose the gaps that create the most operational risk. Start with controls your team can verify, document and improve.

  1. Confirm MFA coverage.Check email, administrator accounts, cloud applications and remote access—not just whether MFA exists somewhere.
  2. Review who still has access.Disable stale accounts and verify the process used when an employee or contractor leaves.
  3. Test a real restore.A successful backup job is not proof that systems, applications and files can be recovered within the time the business needs.
  4. Patch the overlooked systems.Include firewalls, servers, switches, access points and business applications—not only employee computers.
  5. Practice the first hour.Document who to call, what to disconnect, how to preserve evidence and how leadership will communicate during an incident.
Start with your current exposure.
